Cruelty-Free Update

I am saddened by the need to write this post. If you have read my blog for very long, or taken a peek around at various different pages on my blog, you know that I strive to purchase only Cruelty-Free products. There are many drugstore brands that I don't buy because either the brand itself, or the parent company of the brand, is not cruelty-free.(To see my list of companies that do or do not test, click on the link at the top of my blog.)

I have taken to buying a lot of 3 specific drugstore brands because they were cruelty-free (and also had great polish) but I will no longer be purchasing any of those brands. Revlon, a company that stopped animal testing in 1989, has resumed testing to sell their products in Asia (where animal testing is required). In the past few months, Revlon purchased both Sinful Colors and Bari Cosmetics, who owns Pure Ice and Bon Bons brands.  This means I will no longer be purchasing any of these brands - three of my favorite brands. It really saddens me that Revlon felt the need to sell out just to make a bigger profit margin. I guess that's the nature of the beast though. They certainly aren't the first company to start testing so that their products could be sold in Asia.

I have been researching all of this information for a while because I did not want to make a rush decision and falsely accuse these companies without feeling like I had 100% proof. I felt the need to post this so that people would know what was happening with these companies and so they can make their own informed decisions. I do not condemn anyone for purchasing these brands and I am not trying to sway opinions - just stating my own.

Pure Ice Velvet Collection - Swatches and Review

Happy Sunday! I hope you have all had a fantabulous weekend!

This weekend I started hearing about some new lines available from Pure Ice. I decided to check my Walmart - not really expecting them to have them here because we are the last to get everything - but to my surprise they actually did have them! The display was near the hair color, not near the other Pure Ice products or even by the other cosmetics, and it was completely disorganized, with all 4 new collections mixed in with each other. But they were there so I can't complain too much - LOL! I looked briefly at the other collections but they were crowded so I didn't get a chance to take a photo. There was a metallic collection and two different glitter collections (one was more of a shimmer/subtle glitter collection while the other was more chunky glitter.) I decided to just grab a few of the "Velvets" to start.

These have a finish very similar to the Zoya Velvet Mattes line and the OPI Suede line - matte but with a shimmer. The formula was nice - as with all polishes with this type of finish you DO have to make sure the first coat is completely dry before you add another coat. They do not like to be messed with or over-manipulated. I am very impressed with these and will definitely go back for more! You can't beat $1.97 for a polish with a great formula and a finish that is hard to come by!

First up is Stunning. This one is a true pink and actually seems a little bit metallic, but still matte, if that makes any sense at all. I had the most trouble applying this one BUT it was also the first one I used so I think it was just user error and not the polish itself. This is two coats and no top coat.

Next up is Blue Midnight. This is a is a medium bright blue with a bit of green in the base, but not enough to make it teal. This one has a really great depth to it! I love this one more than I expected to. Also 2 coats and no top coat.

Lastly we have Touch Me Softly. This one is a warm-toned berry/violet color and my favorite of the three (although Blue Midnight is a close second). It reminded me a lot of Zoya Harlow and OPI We'll Always Have Paris Suede. Unfortunately I recently got rid of my OPI Suedes but I do have Harlow so I included a comparison pic at the end of this post. :) This is 2 coats and no top coat.

And for the comparison (I also threw Zoya Savita in there too, just for the heck of it).

As you can see, none of them are dupes. But if you have been hunting Harlow and can't find it, the Pure Ice might help a little. Like a Band-Aid. LOL

Pure Ice polishes are available at Walmart and baricosmetics.com for just under $2 each. They were recently acquired by Revlon so maybe they will be available at a wider range of stores soon!

Thanks for reading! ♥

Happy Tuesday everyone! Tonight is gonna be a quick post - it's just been one of those days. LOL

For Day Five of the challenge - blue - I have Pure Ice French Kiss. This is such a gorgeous blue and applied very easily. 2-3 coats for full opacity, depending on how thick your coats are. I highly recommend this one, it's a stunner. It is super shiny - no top coat in the photos.

Doctor Who Celebration Collaboration Mani Day!

Hello again everyone! September 1st is the premiere of the new season of Doctor Who in the UK and to celebrate several of my blogging friends/Whovians and myself  decided to do Doctor Who manis!

I had several ideas for manis - a TARDIS (of course), a Dalek, the logo, etc. but I am not talented enough in  my art skills to pull that off and have them look decent. But I love the background scene that plays during the opening theme song, I had thoughts before deciding to do a Doctor Who mani that that would make an awesome mani. So that's just what I did, and I think it turned out pretty darn well! If you don't know what I am referring to, here is a screenshot:

For this mani I used a new-to-me technique, the "Saran Wrap/plastic wrap technique." The only problem was when I sat down to do it I realized I was out of plastic wrap! LOL So, I improvised and used a plastic baggie.I tried many different layering combos before I found one that I actually liked. I ended up using Pure Ice French Kiss as my base, followed by a layer of black that I used the baggie on and then a layer of Zoya Suri that I also used the baggie on. The two most important tips I can give you with this technique are 1) make sure your base coat is COMPLETELY dry before adding another layer and using the plastic and 2) do not "over dab" - this takes off too much polish.

Holo and Metallic Checkerboards!!

Checkerboard Mani

I have a quick post for you tonight! I reviewed a England Lady of the Lake yesterday and decided I wanted to jazz it up with some nail art. I decided to do a tape mani and remembered one from Chloe's Nails that I thought would be cute. (You can find the tutorial here.) I used Pure Ice Silver Mercedes (my favorite silver) and topped it all with one coat of Poshe.

As you can see it is not 100% perfect but I have thoroughly enjoyed looking at my nails for the past 24 hours! I plan on doing this one again, hopefully it will improve!

♥ Thank Heaven for Little Boys ♥

Time for another group collaboration from some of my blogging friends and me. Our friend Jacki from Adventures in Acetone welcomed her second child, Owen James, into the world on July 16th! To celebrate we are doing a baby boy mani weekend. There may be posts added to this collaboration as late as Tuesday (the 24th) so make sure you check back to see what's new!

Welcome Owen!

I painted my nails and added the dots at night and did not add top coat until 12 hours later and it still smeared. Sadness. It looked so much better before I added the top coat. I used Pure Ice French Kiss as my base and the dots are Milani Beach Front and Milani White on the Spot.

Independence Day Mani - Happy 4th of July!

Happy 4th of July to all of my fellow Americans! My blogging friends and I are doing another collaboration post for Independence Day so make sure to check them out at the end of the post!

My camera died on me before I got decent pics. The first picture is outside and taken with my phone, the second picture is taken inside. So these, unfortunately, will not be my best photos ever.

For this mani I used a franken called "Now I've Got It," made just for me by my friend Rhonni, for the red (it is so much prettier in person!), Pure Ice French Kiss for the blue and Milani White on the Spot for the white. I used Bundle Monster stamping plates BM05 and BM14 for the stars and striping tape for the stripes.

Even though this isn't my most favorite mani ever, and certainly not my best pictures ever, I am very proud to live in this wonderful country and couldn't miss out on the chance to show you my patriotic side! I will be spending my day tomorrow with family, relaxing, having some yummy food and watching fireworks, of course! I hope you all have a wonderful day!

Remember to check out the amazing manis below!
